Plenty of people get braces, especially in their teens. Maybe this is why you thought you knew a lot about them, but regardless, you’re shocked to find that your teeth feel loose after receiving them! What does this mean?
Believe it or not, feeling that your teeth are loose while wearing braces is considered normal. Keep reading to learn why a dentist would likely tell you not to worry about it.
How Do Braces Work?
To explain this sensory phenomenon, it’s important to have a solid understanding of how braces actually work. So let’s review: metal braces use a system of brackets, wires, bands, and in some cases, other attachments, to apply gentle pressure to your teeth.
This pressure is strategically calculated to push your pearly whites into straighter positions over time, which means that you’ll likely have to visit your dentist for a tightening or two as they move ever straighter. Tightening essentially keeps up with your teeth’s new alignments as they continuously shift.
Will My Teeth Fall Out?
No! Fortunately, braces can’t make your teeth fall out.
Now, if you develop cavities or gum disease due to poor oral hygiene, then it’s possible to experience tooth loss as a result of the condition. Untreated cavities will weaken your tooth until it can’t stay in place anymore, while gum disease targets the supporting gums and bone. As your dental supports deteriorate, your tooth can loosen and fall out.
That’s why it’s important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine and keep in touch with your dentist during your treatment!
Are Seemingly Loose Teeth a Good Sign?
In a way, yes – teeth that feel loose during a braces treatment are an indication that your orthodontics are doing what they’re supposed to. The reason your teeth feel a bit wiggly is that, well, things are indeed moving around! Not only are your pearly whites shifting, but the ligaments and surrounding tissues are also adjusting to make room for their new positions.
That said, if you’re worried about the state of your teeth, it never hurts to talk to your dentist. They’ll gladly check your mouth to make sure your pearly whites aren’t unnecessarily loose due to an oral condition. In the meantime, take comfort in knowing that your braces won’t cause your teeth to fall out!
