How Do Traditional Braces Work?

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets that are bonded to the surfaces of your teeth as well as a metal archwire that is threaded through the brackets and held in place with dental elastics. The wire must be changed or tightened every few weeks at follow-up appointments so that it continues to apply pressure to keep teeth moving in the right direction. Over time, your teeth will move into their desired position, and you’ll be left with a new and improved, beautiful smile.

What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?

One of the great advantages of traditional braces is that they are highly versatile, which means they can address nearly all types of misalignments, crookedness, and improperly spaced teeth.

Bite Misalignment

Overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite are different types of misalignments that can put your oral health in jeopardy if treatment remains neglected. Fortunately, traditional braces can move your teeth and jawbones so that your bite more properly aligns, and your teeth come together with greater flexibility and ease.

Crowded & Crooked Teeth

Teeth that overlap, are crooked, or uneven can leave you feeling self-conscious about your appearance. They can also lead to more serious oral health issues, like dental decay, gum disease, and potential damage. Traditional braces, though, can move teeth accordingly so they become more aligned and healthier, leaving you with a smile that not only looks beautiful but remains unharmed in the future.

Gapped Teeth

Gaps that exist in your smile may cause you to be embarrassed around others, especially if they appear in a more prominent and visible area of your mouth. The development of gum disease can also be a heightened risk. Fortunately, metal brackets and wires can move teeth closer together, leaving you with a more even appearance and healthier smile.

Caring for Your Braces

Learning how to care for your braces once they’re in place can take time. You may need to purchase additional instruments to maneuver around brackets and wires; however, taking this extra time will ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout treatment, and you walk away with the smile of your dreams. Some useful tips to better care for your braces include:

  • Practicing good oral hygiene habits that include brushing after every meal as well as in the morning and before going to bed. You’ll also need to floss and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash.
  • Avoiding sticky, hard, and crunchy foods, as these can damage your appliances.
  • Not chewing on hard objects like pens and pencils or ice.
  • Using interdental brushes or a water irrigator to more thoroughly clean around brackets and wires.
